The Morning Brief By Gregor Becker |
Editor-in-Chief (M.Phil Economics, Oxford) | Well, that's a lot of zeros. A loud one, and not for the first time this week. First, this: Binance says hackers took an estimated $6.3 billion, about $3 billion of it frozen, and that it will cover every dollar. Withdrawals should resume within 48 hours, and the laptop theory will have to survive the post-mortem. 🔒 Also on the desk: • | Alphabet sank 12.6% on a revenue shortfall, and ServiceNow fell 26.9% on weak results, so the AI worries now reach software too |
• | And Intel has our analysts split after a 28.2% plunge: Jordan sees an EPS beat that the outlook buried - Jess sees a falling knife with a beta of 2.23. Their argument is below ⬇️ |
Editor's note: Brent is above $90, and our Utilities Portfolio holds regulated power. The portfolio's 74% since January 2024 leaves it 7 points ahead of the S&P 500. See every holding.

What prediction markets are betting on today. | | Top of the Morning Binance says hackers took $6.3 billion and it will cover all of it | | Binance withdrawals frozen after $6.3 billion hack | • | 🔒 The frozen part: Tether, Circle and Ripple account for most of the freeze, and the Arbitrum Security Council froze another $30.5 million. Roughly half the money is therefore stuck in places the thieves cannot spend it, which is the better half to have stuck. |
Dive Deeper: Binance's early view is that a DevOps engineer's laptop was compromised, letting an attacker reach a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawals. Co-CEO Richard Teng cautioned that this was not just one engineer's stolen credentials but a multi-stage attack. Binance says it has no evidence that any private keys leaked. Why it matters: Chainalysis puts the theft at $5.9 billion at the time, four times the Bybit hack in 2025. Binance has promised to cover all losses from its SAFU fund and corporate reserves. Bitcoin traded near $76,937, down 4.9% over 24 hours, and BNB fell 8%. • | 📉 Counterparties: Wintermute and GSR disclosed Binance exposure of less than 20% and less than 5% of net equity respectively, and neither expects disruption. |
• | Our take: The hack is a record, but the response is the story. Frozen funds and a promise to pay mean customers may never notice, which is the outcome an exchange wants. The promise is only as good as the post-mortem Binance says is coming, and the laptop explanation will have to survive it. |

| | Today's Debate → | Is Intel ($INTC) a buy after its 28.2% plunge, or does the selloff hand patient investors a real entry point? |
| Jordan Bittencourt Bull 🐂 |
Yes. Intel ($INTC), the chipmaker with its own foundry segment, beat earnings by 27.9% and still got flattened. • | The number that matters: Intel reported EPS of $0.52 against a $0.41 estimate. Revenue of $16,513M came in just under the $16,555M consensus, which is hardly a disaster. The market is punishing the outlook, and the gap between a solid print and a brutal reaction is where my entry point sits. |
• | The catch I accept: The Benzinga report says the PC slowdown came sooner and deeper than expected, and I take that seriously. The operating margin is -4.2% and ROIC is 1.0%. Those fundamentals are thin, so I would build the position in several smaller purchases rather than one brave one. |
• | The setup I like: Intel fell as Amazon also reported, and the WSJ describes fears around the AI trade extending a tech selloff. Revenue growth of -0.5% tells me the business is roughly flat. It does not tell me it is broken. Sector-wide forced selling creates exactly the sort of dislocation patient buyers wait for. |
| Jess Langley Bear 🐻 |
No. A 28.2% plunge hands you a falling knife, attached to a stock with a beta of 2.23. • | The valuation trap: The multiples give you nothing to anchor on. P/E is -38.7x and EV/EBITDA is -311.4x. Negative earnings mean nobody can honestly call this cheap. And a 0.7% free cash flow yield pays you almost nothing to wait. |
• | Jordan's best point: Jordan will point to the EPS beat, and I would discount it heavily. Revenue missed the estimate. The market sold the top line and the outlook, and it was not especially interested in the bottom line. |
| | The Digest ✨ What investors like you are reading. As CNBC reports, the European Central Bank held its key rate at 2.5%, pausing after its easing cycle. How long the pause lasts is what euro-area bond yields and the euro now depend on. BP ($BP) posted net income of $8.46 billion, beating expectations, Reuters reports. That strengthens the case for continued buybacks and dividends as the oil major leans on cash generation. Seeking Alpha argues that Sprouts Farmers Market ($SFM) faces a tough climb back after its share slump, so a recovery may take time. Holders should weigh that view carefully. |
