| The Morning Brief Monday, 19 October 2026 |
| Morning, pull up a chair. France spent the weekend on fire, and the bond market only shrugged, a little. French stocks led European losses as the CAC 40 fell 1.38% and the 10-year yield rose 7 basis points, with more than half a million marching over prices and public services. 🔥 Also on the table: • | JFrog is down 11.1% premarket, with software peers Datadog and UiPath sliding too, 3.8% and 6.0% - a rough start for the software crowd |
• | And Palo Alto Networks has our analysts split: Jordan says 24.5% revenue growth shouldn't earn a lasting discount over one firewall flaw - Jess says a 743.5x trailing P/E leaves no room for it. Where they land is down below ⬇️ |
• | Editor's note: Big Tech earnings are near, and our Data Center Portfolio owns the AI buildout. See every holding. |

| | Top of the Morning France's Streets Are On Fire. Its Bond Market Is Merely Uncomfortable. | | France's political turmoil is eroding confidence in its debt and markets. | Dive Deeper: Investors are less worried about the burning buildings than about the arithmetic behind the anger. France's public debt is about 119% of GDP, and its 2026 deficit is projected at 5.4%, against an EU reference limit of 3%. • | 📉 The spread: The extra yield France pays over Germany is the highest since the early-2010s sovereign debt crisis. On Friday it was roughly 137 basis points. Capital Economics expects about 200 by the end of 2027. |
Why it matters: The protesters want less austerity, and the bond market wants more. Both are speaking clearly. Goldman Sachs' Sharon Bell said it is hard to see the deficit shrinking without painful measures, and that taxes could rise. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu's minority government must still pass the 2027 budget, which has already toppled two of his recent predecessors. • | 🗳️ The calendar: The presidential election comes next year, and Marine Le Pen is topping many polls. Ninety One warned that without a budget the deficit could exceed 6%. |
• | Our take: UBS's Kiran Ganesh said political risk means near-term volatility, with other factors likelier to matter more over the longer run. That is probably right. Riots move prices for a day, while a deficit moves them for years. The protests did not create France's problem. They just made it hard to ignore. |
| | Pre-Market Movers Pre-market data as of 6:01 AM ET | Jordan Bittencourt Equity Analyst · on today’s gainers |
| $CLF +7.2% Cleveland-Cliffs Cleveland-Cliffs ($CLF), a North American flat-rolled steel maker, is up 7.2% pre-market to $13.02 after EPS of $0.28 beat the $0.21 estimate on 19 October 2026. That's 2.6x the stock's average daily move. The next scheduled event is Q4 earnings in early 2027. |
| $HONA +7.1% Honeywell Aerospace Honeywell Aerospace ($HONA), an avionics and navigation sensors supplier, is up 7.1% to $174.68, 2.7x its average daily move. The jump fits with aerospace peer GE Aerospace ($GE) gaining 1.2%. The stock still sits well below its $297.50 52-week high. Next up is Q3 earnings on October 28. |
| $AR +5.6% Antero Resources Antero Resources ($AR), an Appalachian Basin gas and NGL producer, is up 5.6% to $38.49 as energy peers EOG Resources ($EOG) and EQT ($EQT) gain 3.6% and 2.8%. That's 3.3x its average daily move. The immediate story might be simple: gas names are bid. Next catalyst: October 28, when Antero reports Q3 earnings. |
| | Jess Langley Macro Researcher · on today’s losers |
| $FROG -11.1% JFrog JFrog ($FROG), the software supply chain tooling specialist, is down 11.1% to $84.01, against a Nasdaq down 2.1%. Software peers Datadog ($DDOG) and UiPath ($PATH) are falling too, 3.8% and 6.0%. That's 3.7x JFrog's average daily move. The next scheduled event is Q3 earnings on November 5. |
| $MRNA -10.2% Moderna Moderna ($MRNA), the mRNA-focused drug developer, is down 10.2% to $212.34 after a roughly 588% year-to-date surge. That's only 1.4x its average daily move of 7.3%. At that price, the stock is still close to its $242.29 52-week high. Next up is Q3 earnings on November 6. |
| $CRWV -10.1% CoreWeave, Inc. Class A Common Stock CoreWeave ($CRWV), the GPU-rental cloud for AI workloads, is down 10.1% to $62.64 following a monster insider-trading alert, while Nebius ($NBIS) drops 8.4%. That's 2.2x the stock's average daily move. The stock sits near its $59.51 low. Next catalyst: November 9, when CoreWeave reports Q3 earnings. |
| | ➡️ Easy-to-Follow Portfolio | | • | The record: A rules-based screen and ranking system. It's a set of conviction holdings, screened from 41 tracked names and reviewed every week. More importantly, there are hard rules for what gets sold, so you can see why a name is in the portfolio and when it would go. |
| | Today's Debate → | Is the 6% drop in Palo Alto Networks ($PANW) a buying opportunity, or is the market overreacting to a stock that still has a strong long-term story? |
| Jordan Bittencourt Bull 🐂 |
Yes. If a business is growing revenue 24.5% with a 70.4% gross margin, it seems a little dramatic to hand it a lasting discount because one firewall vulnerability headline landed on a. • | The catalyst: Palo Alto Networks ($PANW), the firewall maker behind the centralized Panorama management platform, fell as cybersecurity stocks sold off again on a hacker vulnerability tied to one of its firewall platforms. I think vulnerabilities get patched. |
• | The valuation claim: Operating margin is 6.1% and return on invested capital is 1.0%. That is a company still early in turning growth into profit. I think that gap is the opportunity, because any margin expansion from here compounds on a revenue base that is already growing fast. |
• | The risk: The Nasdaq fell 2.14% and the S&P 500 fell 1.09% in the same session, so some of this drop is plain beta. I would watch whether the vulnerability widens into customer losses. I see no evidence of that yet, and I would buy the weakness. |
| Jess Langley Bear 🐻 |
No. A 743.5x trailing P/E leaves no room for a security flaw in the flagship firewall platform, and one session of selling barely dents a price that rich. • | The valuation: At 181.7x EV/EBITDA, the stock is priced for flawless execution for years. A free cash flow yield of 1.5% means you earn almost nothing while you wait. So this haircut still leaves a very expensive stock. |
• | Jordan's best point: Jordan will point to the strong long-term story and a balance sheet showing net debt to EBITDA of -0.0x. It is a clean balance sheet. But it protects against bankruptcy, which nobody is worried about, and does nothing for a multiple this stretched. |
• | The risk: Cybersecurity stocks sold off again amid a hacker vulnerability involving a Palo Alto firewall platform. A security vendor with a security flaw damages the one thing it sells. With the Nasdaq down the same day, I would not call this an overreaction yet. |
