| | Top of the Morning France Borrows at Nearly 5%. Investors Would Like a Plan. | | France's 5% borrowing costs are weighing down its budget. | Dive Deeper: The trigger was a weekend of violent protests, with more than 2,400 arrests and curfews in several cities. Investors are asking whether a fragmented government can pass a credible 2027 budget while the public objects to austerity. • | 🗳️ Hard to govern: "Either bond markets will revolt, or the people, or both," said RBC BlueBay's Mike Bell. France's deficit is about 5% of GDP, against a 3% target the government wants to reach in 2029. Bell's view is that the measures needed would not win an election, and imposing them without one would cause riots. |
Why it matters: Moody's reviews France on Friday. It rates the country Aa3 with a negative outlook, and a one-notch cut would leave France investment grade and still eligible as ECB collateral. • | 🏦 Banks feel it first: Société Générale fell 3.41% on Monday, Crédit Agricole 2.64% and BNP Paribas 2.48%. The CAC 40 is down roughly 4.3% this year. |
• | Our take: A downgrade would be bad news, though not news in any useful sense, since the bond market has been delivering the verdict all month. The harder problem is that France's creditors want fiscal consolidation, its voters want something else, and the 5% yield is where those two wishes meet. |

| | | | Today's Debate → | Is Netflix ($NFLX) a buy after its 7.7% drop, or is the selloff a little overdone? |
| Jordan Bittencourt Bull 🐂 |
Yes. A business with 29.5% operating margins and 26.6% return on invested capital does not deserve a full repricing because an ad outlook disappointed, even with shares down 27% this year. • | The quality case: Netflix ($NFLX), the third-largest name among tracked entertainment peers, grew revenue 15.9% in its latest year with a 48.5% gross margin. I think that is a compounding machine, and Reuters framed the drop as investor anxiety over profit and the ad outlook. |
• | The catalyst: The quarter itself was a clean beat, with EPS of $0.87 against $0.82 expected. Finbold reports it beat on both earnings and revenue, so I read the sell-off as a reaction to forward commentary, and that is where I would look for a rebound. |
• | The risk: Barrons points to a saturated market and growing competition, and the revenue beat was razor thin at $12,874M versus $12,869M. I would size the position with that in mind, but a thin top-line beat does not erase returns this strong. |
| Jess Langley Bear 🐻 |
No. A 7.7% drop leaves the stock still down the same ratio this year, and still short of a fix. • | Jordan's best point: Jordan will point to the earnings beat, with EPS of that figureagainst that figureexpected. Fair enough. But that +6.1% surprise sits next to revenue of that figure against that figure, a +0.0% beat. Reuters says weak profit and the ad outlook deepened investor anxiety. So the beat was not what the market was pricing. |
• | The valuation trap: At 19.5x earnings and an 8.0x EV/EBITDA, I do not see a stock that has been pushed into bargain territory. A beta of 1.61 means this name swings harder than the market, so a cheap-looking multiple can compress further if sentiment sours again. |
• | The timeline risk: Finbold cites an analyst who warns the stock could wait years for its strategy to pay off, even after a blockbuster quarter. Barron's adds that competition is growing. I would want proof before buying. |
